Default New pot....

Well not a pot yet but it will be before boxing day for Baz's meet..!!
Will post progress here over the next few days but it has to be built before then

Here's the material and it weighs loads (3"x3"x6"), will get a weight before I machine it and a weight afterwards.

There is a drawing of the finished item in my blog but am thinking of only machining 75mm deep instead of 100mm but drilling the holes the same distance from the base to increase mass and surface area to help stablise temps on load.

A fun few days ahead machining and then testing on the big day.

Great! Good to see someone else trying their own pot design in the UK

I am kinda copying someones design but hoping to improve on what they have done, either way a cheap high proformance heavy pot.

Rich, yep, got it brand new from 'mallard metals' he's dead cheap even though he buys the stuff in. Cost me £97 inc vat and p+p.

Being a mechanical engineer myself I would be interested in tools & machine used if you want to give me the info. Plus i am a sad git so could you do a small video of it being machined as would be good to see all your money turn to swarf!!!!!!!!!

Still looking forward to the story of this one!

Benchtecs first home made LN2 pot. This would be a good feature to run in the new year on the front page. How the pot develops from a drawing to it's final stage of development, as an instrument of CPU torture. That seems to be a very appealing price considering the size of the piece of copper you have. Was there any shipping costs or did you go round to collect?
How much have you budgeted for the machining?

This is the place I get some of my materials from, don't know if it will work out any cheaper they should be able to order whatever you need. How are you planning to machine the angled tapers on the end?

Got a Colchester lathe in my back shed so gonna dig out the four jaw and slap that on it.
But yeah, I'll be saving the swarf and weighing it in

That price included the shipping and the vat Dan.
As for budget for machining, I'll be doing it meself

I just checked your link, may ask them for a quote next time round, A local company to me could get it but for £10 more and shipping was double too.
I'm in two minds about base, I would like to do a square base but it may have to add a slight chamfer in that as I don't have a cnc mill yet. So if I'm gonna be pushed for time then I'll just turn it round in my lathe and make a massive taper on it.

prices seam ok but they dont list 3x3 copper bar only 1/4" and 1/2" there 3x3 alloy is a good price tho

@dave i know you'll be in for a stella soon and to charge the batters on that battry drill you are using j/k

That's a nice chunk of copper!

Does anyone have any advice regarding pot design?

Is there a 'best' design at the moment?

What about base thickness and surface area at the bottom of the pot; how does this affect the cooling?

I've never tried turing square to round in copper before, so I would be interested in seeing how it goes. I'd imagine youll need a lot of horespower and patience. One idea I had was setting it up between centres on the lathe then offset the tailstock should get you a taper, not sure if its the effect you are looking for though.

Good questions
As I see it K|ngp|ns F1 is the best out there so I'm kinda copying his a little, also the fact that square was a lot cheaper than round copper bar. I'm thinking of making the base higher for more weigh so god help me if I get a cold bug but should be able hold temps just off that with the mass involved.

For the record, the blank weighs 7.8kgs at the moment. Any one knows knows what the max you put on the cpu.? Or how much one of Vinces pots weigh.?

I may have to dimple the end so I can use my live centre just to stop anything nasty happening, it'll be sticking out 4.5" from the chuck so I can see it being a nightmare. May have to borrow the machine vice from work then, balls just come from there

Here's me drawing. Like I mentioned I will only go in 75mm not the hundred, I can always machine more out later...
